Our Dog, Sophie – Helper Around the Farm

Sophie is a Great Pyrenees dog. These dogs come from the Southern Pyrenees part of France. According to Wikipedia, “The Pyrenean Mountain Dog, known as the Great Pyrenees in North America, is a large breed of dog used as a livestock guardian dog. ” From the moment she is let outside, she runs around our property and barks – what I think is a warning to predators that they stay away. She runs near the chicken coop, goat pasture fenced area and circles out past the garden. All the while, barking. She barks at all suspected predators, even birds and airplanes. Yes, airplanes. Her job is to protect and guard her animals. She encircles the chickens if they are getting too close to the forest and brings them back onto the grassy area of the yard. She is loveable with the kids and lets them lay their heads on her at night while watching a movie. She is very gentle and mostly, loves to give hugs, if allowed.

Here she is in action chasing a deer…

I end with our cat, Custard. A long story about why his name is this. Let’s just leave it at he REALLY enjoys custard dessert
